The Importance of Healing Birth Trauma from Within

Diana Fischer, a Clinical Hypnotherapist and HypnoBirthing Childbirth Educator from WA sees the effects of birth trauma too often, and has developed the Guided Meditation ‘Healing Birth Trauma from Within’ for women to heal from their disappointing births and find inner peace.

The statistics and scary truth of birth trauma  are seeing women and men with acute stress disorder (ASD), post partum traumatic stress disorder (PPTSD), and Post Natal Depression (PND). Having a difficult birth can leave you with deep emotional trauma, and these memories and feelings have an effect on your self esteem, relationships and even the every day activities we should be taking joy in.

What I’m noticing

I have been a HypnoBirthing practitioner since 2008, I have 3 boys and have been fascinated by birth, long before I birthed my own babies. There was something about the whole process that I was drawn to. As a practitioner I would teach women and their partners about the mental, emotional and physical preparation for birth and witnessed many couples through their journey from fear of the unknown to quiet confidence in the birthing process.

When I first begun this wonderful work I would have classes full only of first time mamas all coming with different expectations and fears but after a few years I would begin to see more and more second or third time mamas bringing a different experience into the classes.

Some had had really traumatic first births and had turned to HypnoBirthing, as they wanted to do things differently; a new model of care, more informed decisions, more tools, more preparation and deep within them they needed healing, they needed a better experience this time around..and most of them got it.

Generations of women are grieving

Often it is obvious to a women that a birth has left them deeply traumatised, for others it may be months or even years where unresolved emotions and feelings come to the surface.. feelings of guilt, resentment, anger, regret, shame, injustice.. sometimes they don’t even make the connection to the birth .. whatever it may be I believe that a space must be created to honour and heal these powerful emotions.

“If a woman doesn’t look like a goddess in labour, then someone isn’t treating her right”- Ina may gaskin.

Women are AMAZING .. they have the incredible ability to grow and birth human beings, and surely they should be treated with upmost kindness, support and respect! But sadly not every woman is treated this way, or perhaps her baby didn’t survive the birth journey and needs even more emotional support in the grieving process.

Of course it is not only the beautiful women wanting to go on and have more babies that are so in need of healing their previous birth trauma, there is a whole generation of women, grandmothers, great grandmothers who are still holding the scars of birth trauma..

Just the other day I met a lovely lady in her late 70’s who described to me in great detail what happened to her with the birth of her fist child where she was so sadly mistreated by hospital staff over 50 years ago.Back then a lot of women didn’t even  speak of the mistreatment, just accepted it as part of the process and pain of childbirth.

Times are changing

Something is shifting.. something powerful!  Women are waking up and speaking out and changes are happening. Pregnant women are researching their birth places, seeking out different care providers, questioning outdated practices, finding birth doulas and postnatal doulas who are aligned with their wishes and beliefs that birth can be different.

Birth can be different, and especially, When women support women, incredible things happen.

It is simply not enough to commiserate a women who has come through a difficult birth experience with “all that matters is a healthy Mum and baby” because we know that it’s not.  We know that a mother’s mental state affects her baby, it deeply affects the whole family.  Birth trauma can affect a woman’s sense of self, self confidence, bonding, relationships and even her baby’s sense of security which impacts their future development.

Get support and heal

Women need to know there is help and support out there if they have experienced a traumatic birth and they all deserve the support. I believe even women who have had mostly positive births still need to debrief and process aspects of their birth as birth itself is such a huge process physically emotionally and spiritually!

I developed this guided meditation to give women an opportunity to begin healing, a safe place to debrief and let go. It makes me so happy to hear that women are finding the healing they needed from the album. I look forward to being able to support you through this album, and hearing how it has helped you, and may you find that inner peace you deserve.

Read this wonderful testimonial from a mother that has used the guided meditation!

“After 2 very traumatic birth experiences, the last being a 25 weeker born 6 months ago, I was eager to find a way to heal emotionally. This is when I stumbled upon this life changing meditation by Diana. I have done one or two meditations before, but they were nothing like this! During the meditation I was able to completely relax and immerse myself in Diana’s guidance. I found that she was saying things just as I was thinking them. Almost as if she was reading my mind! This meditation really helped me to let go of a lot of emotional pain I had been holding onto since the birth of my babies, and even had tears streaming down my face the first few times I listened to it. I now listen to this meditation at least once a week, simply because it relaxes me so much! Thank you Diana for sharing such a beautiful meditation. You truly have a wonderful gift”.
