The Calm HypnoBirthing of Blake Hudson
Born at Nambour Hospital on 29 Oct 2016
Samantha came to see practitioner, Carrie Jeff early in her pregnancy to ask if HypnoBirthing could help her achieve a much wanted VBAC. Her and her husband embraced the philosophy and worked together as a team in preparation to birth their second baby. Sam also attended regular yoga classes with Carrie right up until 40 weeks. Strong, focused and calm – she did it!!!! Renowned Birth Photographer Melissa Jean said on her instagram page it was “one of the calmest, unassisted births I’ve ever seen.”
Samantha’s Empowering VBAC
Blake Hudson Henshaw joined us earth side in the early hours of Saturday morning 12:56 am on the 29th October 2016. At 40+5 weighing 7 pound 7 ounces. 3 hours of active labour spent mostly at home and 30 mins of calm birth breathing. Anthony was able to calmly and excitingly catch Blake in the water as he made his entrance.
During early labour at home Anthony set the room up with candles and we were just listening to the affirmations and rainbow relaxation on repeat. We ate dinner, sat on our back deck and listened to the crickets and just relaxed.
My surges intensified quickly and i was starting to struggle to breathe through them, having in my head that I would still have another 12-24 hours ahead of me. A vaginal exam from my midwife Ali, revealed I was 4 cm dilated. Somehow the next hour passed by as if it was just 5 mins.
Ali asked if I wanted to go to hospital and I said yes because I knew i could have pain relief there. I was worried about the drive but we made it there and got to the birth suite around 11.30 pm. As soon as we got there my body started shaking and I could not breathe through my surges. I had this intense urge to push but I thought I was no where near that time. I pleaded with Anthony to get me an epidural, he kept telling me how good i was doing so I looked Ali in the eye and told her how I felt I couldn’t keep going (again I thought I still had another 12 hours of labour ahead).
Ali had already arranged for the bath to be filled and as I got in I had instant relief. Anthony said that he could see a head and I told him that couldn’t be the case. Ali could tell the stage I was at and told me to trust my body. I started to bear down with each surge and after 30 mins Blake was born into the water.
Carrie was a vital part of our support and education in this journey and I’m over joyed to share I achieved my med-free, VBAC, water-birth. A million thanks to Carrie, her Hypnobirthing course and yoga classes.

Big thanks also going to Ali from Coast Life Midwifery.
