PREGNANCY GUIDE

21 Weeks Pregnant

This is a fabulous time of pregnancy, as you feel energised, healthy and strong!
Your baby is around 360g, 26.7cm long and the size of a pomelo.

Babys Development

At week 21 weeks of pregnancy, even though your baby’s eyes are still sealed, her eyes are practising and taste buds are forming on her tongue. Your baby may suck his fingers or thumb and can hear your voice.

Studies have shown that newborns will settle easily when they hear the gentle voices of those who cared for and nurtured them and the mother during pregnancy. So be mindful of your environment and the pace that you’re keeping.

Give yourself permission to slow down a little and if there have been moments of stress in your day, connect with your baby and reassure him or her that all is OK.

Your baby is increasingly putting on weight and is nourishing herself by drinking amniotic fluid. She also breathes in the fluid and urinates in it! Your body is, however, constantly recycling this fluid – all done for you by your amazing body!

What’s Happening For You

  • Baby’s fluttering movements (called quickening) will be more noticeable – a wonderful part of being pregnant. You may start to feel them increasing to kicks and prods. If you apply pressure to your belly, baby may move away – or push back as he now responds to your touch.
  • Your energy levels are probably higher now and this is usually an enjoyable part of pregnancy, over the fatigue and nausea of the first trimester yet not too heavy or achy with a full term baby. Enjoy these weeks and embrace the miracle you are a part of!

Things To Consider

  • Try and exercise as much as you can comfortably, making sure to not overheat or hold your breath. Walking, yoga and swimming are great activities to build strength and stamina whilst being gentle to your body and baby – your heart is already working 50% more in everyday life now you’re pregnant. Always listen to what your body is telling you. Women who stay strong and fit are more capable of staying calm and focused during labour. Labour requires deep relaxation and surrender, but it also requires physical stamina and resilience. These important qualities can be cultivated through physical and mental exercise.
  • Consider adding meditation to your birth preparation as well as working on your physical self – the mind also needs strength and determination!! Exercise can also help lift spirits and increase general wellbeing. This is especially true if you exercise outside and get to enjoy nature too.
