5 Weeks Pregnant
For the first 8 weeks your baby is referred to as an embryo, but to you, ‘it’s a baby’! Your baby is about 1.25mm long.
Baby’s Development
During this embryonic stage (lasting 5 weeks), the cells develop into organs.
The embryo is made of three important layers:
- Top Layer – develops into the brain, nerves, skin, eye’s and ears, nails and hair.
- Middle Layer – develops the heart, kidneys, muscles, blood vessels and reproductive organs, bone and joints.
- Bottom Layer – develops the stomach, liver, intestines, lungs and urinary tract.
This week the beginnings of the brain and spinal cord are formed. The heart starts to pump blood, and limb buds appear. Major divisions of the brain can now be discerned.
