1-3 Weeks Pregnant
These first 1-3 weeks of pregnancy are magical weeks!
This is where it all begins. In this first 1-3 weeks you body is gearing up to pave the way for the new developing baby.
Your body is ready to go!
Prior to fertilization, your body has been preparing for pregnancy. Your eggs have been ripening, the uterine wall thickening in readiness to nestle and protect an egg. Your cervical mucus has also increased. Your ovaries increase the production of the ‘pregnancy maintaining’ hormone progesterone, and the delicate balance of hormones just perfect for fertilisation.
Fertilisation
Fertilization typically occurs at the end of the second week when you ovulate, and millions of sperm swim on a mission to fertilize an egg. 1 single sperm is successful and penetrates the egg. The single cell (zygote) begins to divide again and again, forming a hollow ball of three cell layers (blastocyst). Little hairlike chorionic villi appear on the outside and help the blastocyst burrow into the uterus, generally on the upper back wall.
When the blastocyst implants into the lining of your uterus it is about 0.23mm long. The placenta grows to cover 1/15th of the uterine interior, and your breasts may be beginning to feel tender.
At this point you may not be aware that you are pregnant, although some women say that they just know when they fell pregnant. Pregnancy tests may not indicate a positive pregnancy at this stage.
Sit back and relax! Your body’s got this!
Next week, and then each week until your birth we will be sharing affirmations with you. Affirmations are a powerful tool to accessing and maintaining a positive mindset. A positive mindset is not only important for you and your baby’s health and development, it is going to have a profound impact on your birth.
